How To Tie Your Shoe

Grace wanted to learn to tie her shoe because no one else in her class could yet, so Bryon sat down when he got home tonight and taught her how. She practiced and practiced and now she's a pro! At least until morning, we'll see if it sticks!

Greening the Big Cedars

We've been trying to "green up" around here for the past year or so and I thought it might be interesting to keep a list of the "green" changes we've made and are making around the farm. Of course we aren't perfect, but I figure every little bit helps!

1. Recycling paper, cardboard, glass, plastic, aluminum and tin.
2. Changing out our lightbulbs to CFL.
3. Turning off the lights.
4. Turning off the water when I brush my teeth.
5. Washing clothes in cold water.
6. Occasionally hanging clothes out to dry.
7. Stopped using fabric softner.
8. Raising our own pork and chicken. Bryon hunting deer and turkey.
9. Changing our air filters often and buying a Boston Fern and other plants to help clean the air inside.
10. Turning the computers off when we aren't using them.
11. Using organic or natural body products.
12. Buying less things with high fructose corn syrup.
13. Buying something every week at our local Farmer's Market.
14. Working from home office when I can.
15. Bryon picking up Grace on the way home to avoid extra car trips.
16. Having THREE library cards and checking out library books instead of buying them.
16. Using green household cleaning products.
17. Washing the dishes by hand unless I have a full load for the dishwasher.
18. Making Equal Exchange Fair Trade coffee at home and taking it in my stainless steel tumbler.
19. Buying non bleached flour and using whole wheat flour more.
20. Eating only whole wheat pasta's at home.
21. Making homemade pizzas.
22. Making homemade rolls instead of buying the refrigerated rolls.
23. Eating less prepackaged foods.
24. Noticing the ingredients on food packages and choosing more organic and natural foods.
25. Growing our garden!
26. Recycling my office paper and printing on both sides when I can.
27. Primarily using stainless steel cookware and stone bakeware to avoid aluminum.

NOT Green Things We've Had To Do!
1. Use Frontline on our dog and cat to keep the fleas and ticks out of the house
2. Have a professional exterminator come and spray for ants.
3. Used Roundup on our poison ivy in the ditch.
4. Eat too many meals at McDonalds.
5. Not giving up Betty Crocker Fudge brownies.
6. Not giving up Crest toothpaste.

Resolutions, Goals and Life Lists

1. Watch less television (really hard for me because I'm a total addict, there should be a 12 step program or a patch).
2. Read 52 books in a year (which would be a lot easier if I watched less television).
3. Eat no fast food for a year (I'm not sure that's even possible).
4. Plan our family meals a week/month at a time and shop for them accordingly.
5. Lose 20 pounds...again.
6. Cut my hair (childhood hair trauma has kept my hair long for the past 25 years, again, I probably need a patch or 12 step program for this one too).
7. Learn some Italian.
8. Go to Italy (obviously learning some Italian would help this cause and Dawn and I are going to try to save enough money to go together the summer of 2010)
9. Learn to play my really spectacular Taylor Big Baby guitar (or at least a few recognizable campfire worthy songs).
10. Raise all of our own meat on the farm.
11. Learn to make cheese and bread.
12. Finish the last 12 mile section of the Ozarks Highland Trail in Arkansas (I have already hiked 153 miles of it).
13. Print last year's photos so I can scrapbook them.
14. Scrapbook them.
